Second Call for the Humanities and Social Sciences
A second call of the NRP 84 invites humanities and social sciences (HSS) projects to address ethical, societal, economic and regulatory aspects of new plant breeding technologies.
The NRP 84 aims to address critical issues related to food security, biodiversity and the socio-economic implications of new plant breeding technologies. While the first call successfully attracted projects that explore the technological feasibility and facilitated multidisciplinary collaboration, it revealed a gap in addressing ethical, societal, economic and regulatory aspects. To fill this gap, the upcoming second call, launching in early February 2025, will focus exclusively on projects from the humanities and social sciences.
Researchers are invited to explore themes with practical relevance, addressing stakeholders such as academics, legislators, food producers, processors, retailers and consumers, as well as biodiversity conservation actors, advocacy groups, as well as the media. Proposals are expected to generate actionable insights that enrich public debate, inform policy and enhance transparency on new plant breeding technologies.
The second call also emphasizes inter- and transdisciplinary approaches, encouraging collaboration among diverse fields such as applied ethics, anthropology, media communication, economics and law. Researchers are especially encouraged to work closely with stakeholders to ensure that projects not only address academic inquiries but also produce outputs relevant to society and policy.
For updates on submission procedures and deadlines, interested researchers are advised to check the NRP 84 website in early February 2025 and to subscribe to the SNSF newsletter.
